Artist Statement Hanne Tharaldsen
I am trained as a photographer and painter. I have studied a variety of techniques for combining these two media into one picture. I also produce video and installation work, and stage various performance-based shows in connection with my exhibitions.
All my pieces revolve around the human body and bodily awareness. One of my major themes has been sexual obsession and eroticism as a basis for creative forces. Other important themes are the human experience, transformation and growth seen from a metaphysical and spiritual point of view.
I work in a feminist tradition, meaning that I highlight women’s life and experiences with the intention of liberation and empowerment. I think the best way to express something universal is to be intimately personal. By conceptualizing my experiences through art, I hope to reach the kernel of something that other people will find recognizable and meaningful. When working, I interpret my feelings and emotions through my body. My projects often start with a series of self-portraits with bodily awareness.
